TOPIC

High foreign debt is weighing heavily on the national budgets of numerous African countries.
The latest Global Sovereign Debt Monitor 2025 by erlassjahr.de and Misereor shows that 70% of countries in sub-Saharan Africa are heavily or very heavily by the debt service.
Due to the massive payments to the financial sector in the Global North, there is often little money left for socially necessary and important expenditures: health, education, environmental protection, and the development of a sovereign economy. Currently, 25 African countries spend more money on debt servicing than on health care.
There are still no clear paths on how to end the debt spiral and regulate payment defaults. The states and banks that grant loans determine the rules of the game. In cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, they cut all socially and economically essential budget items. This constellation regularly causes economic crises, as a result of which both companies and the public sector repress wages, dismantle labor rights, and fire workers. This not only has drastic consequences for the workers themselves, it also systematically reduces the power of trade unions.
The International Trade Union Confederation Africa (ITUC-Africa) aims to change this and is working on a campaign on the issue of debt. Most recently, a pan-African rally for debt cancellation took place in Accra, Ghana, at the end of August. ITUC-Africa General Secretary Akhator Joel Odigie is calling for debt cancellation for indebted countries in Africa, fairer rules for payment defaults, and more money for social security, the environment, and good jobs, among other things.
International solidarity is needed to achieve these goals. That is why Akhator Joel Odigie is coming to Germany and Frankfurt / Main to report on the work of ITUC-Africa and to exchange with workers and trade unionists.
The focus will be on the following questions:
•    What has ITUC-Africa already achieved?
•    How can German trade unions show solidarity?
•    What can Germany and Europe do to make the debt system fairer?
Join us for the event and discussion!
